I remember the first time I saw a portrait photograph, it was a photograph of my family at at a family party it had my mum, dad, sister, brother, nan and grandad in it.The photograph was printed and was in a photo album along with other photos of my family.I would describe in a list of words as;
old
realistic
loving
I would use these words to describe the photograph as everyone was looking very happy to be in eachother's company and it was taken about 15 years ago.I think that photography has advanced since I first saw the photo as there is better and more access to equipment.

Portrait recreation
This is the picture I decided to recreate, although I did not fully recreate this imaged as there are different babies in each picture as in the picture on the left I was around 4-5 years old holding my baby cousin, whereas in the picture on the right it is a picture of me and my niece in this image I was around 13 years old.I could have positioned the angle of the camera better and done a full face image instead of an image that is angled to the side of my face.I also could have moved my arms to position them like they were in the image to the left.
What is a genre?
A genre can be described as a category or type of photograph. Most genres used by photographers have already existed as genres, which were used in painting before photography was created.Usually a genre within photography creates an expectation for the meanings to come from that type of photograph.Sometimes photographers interpret genres in their own way.
Compare and contrast
The similarities with these photos are that they both look very old, they also both have a person in them, both of these images are distorted a bit as they are both old.The differences in these images are that in the one in the right it is in black and white and the one on the left is more yellow in a way.Another difference is that the one on the left is a close up and you can clearly see this mans face also that man has his clothes on whereas the one on the right is an image with more than his face in it but his face is not clearly seen he also does not seem to have clothes on.I think that the images are in different colours because they were taken by different people and it could be what they wanted the photo to be of. I think that the photo of Robert Cornelius is just his head and shoulders because it looks like more of a professional photo whereas the other picture looks more artistic.I think that in the Hippolyte Bayard photograph the man is laying down because he could be dead, unconscious or asleep.I personally like the photo on the right as it is a questionable photo as you do not know what the man is doing and it is interesting as you do not know what is going on behind him whereas in the picture on the left it is just a plain background and there is no objects in the back.
Tyler Mitchell
Tyler Mitchell is a very young photographer his images are mostly taken outside in the southern America.Tyler Mitchell's reasoning for taking these images is that he wanted to take images of people of colour at leisure, relaxing and being natural. He uses land, water, sky, in both natural and artificial forms. Some of his work looks like paintings but that creates a nice effect as the longer you look at it the more it looks artificial. I like Tyler Mitchell's work a his work is not something I have seen before and it is very different to other photographers that we have studied.
Trip and Tyler Mitchell exhibition
These 20 images are the ones i chose out of the ones that I took on the trip.
These are some of my favourite photos from the trip to the Gagosian gallery and the Photographers gallery.I liked the Tyler Mitchell exhibition as his work is very abstract and is not like anything I have seen before, I like his work as it is very out of the ordinary and also gives you an insight into other peoples minds and their preferences.
On the way back from the trip we were asked to focus on something and take images of it whenever you saw it,I decided to take images of plants and flowers although it was hard as there was not many plants or flowers that I could see. My favourite image is the first one as i like how the flowers are drooping in a neat format and how the colours blend together well.
Tyler Mitchell responses
These are a few pictures from the trip that I took inspired by Tyler Mitchell's work,I think that these images were inspired by Tyler Mitchell as he liked to take images of people doing everyday things, I think that these images represent this as I took an image of someone sleeping in the park which is something that I think is somewhat a normal activity.I also like these images as they can give you an insight into peoples lives and what they do on a daily basis.
Chris Killip research
Chris Killip is a British manx photographer who worked at Havard university. He is known for his monochrome photographs which are based on people and places in the north east of England during the 1980s.
These are some of the images I took inspired by Chris Killp's work I took images and edited them to make them black and white like Chris Killip's work.
Trish Morrissey
Trish Morrissey is a UK based visual artist who frequently is inspired by her familial history and archival materials. She likes to reinterpret stories from the past to create new narratives. Most of her photos feature herself but she doesn't like to perceive them as self portraits.she likes to inhabit the roles of family members, historical figures and sometimes strangers. She encounters groups in public and then inserts herself into the frame. The images above that I chose stuck out to me as the photo of her in the middle has a good contrast with the black background and the lighting on her face, her hair also blends in with the background, the snail also sticks out as it has been placed on her face.

Vivian Maier
Vivian Maier was an American street photographer whose work was discovered after her death. She mainly worked as a nanny for 40 years while pursuing her photography and hiding it.She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime mostly of people in Chicago.During her lifetime her work was unknown and unpublished and many of her negatives her never developed.I like her work as it was all hidden and no one knew about it until after she died.I also like that in some of her photographs you cant see her face I like this as it brings out some mystery in her work. I like her work as she is in the photos but she also isn't at the same time as in most of her images it is in reflections and you cannot see her face.I also like her as a photographer and find her interesting as she managed to hide her work and her talent for over 40 years.
These are some photos that I took inspired by Vivian Maier's work. I edited the photos so that they would be in black and white and I tried to take them mostly in reflection as most of her work is in black and white and taken in reflections. I liked taking photos inspired by Vivian Maier's work because her work is very interesting and I like black and white photographs as it could make you think about what colours were originally in the picture before it was edited to be in black and white.
Vivian Sassen
Viviane Sassen is a Dutch photographer that lives in Amsterdam, she focuses her work on body abstraction and geometric shapes. She has also collaborated with big brands such as Louis Vuitton as the image on the left is one from the shoot she done with Louis Vuitton. It shows a man in a blue suit with holding a bag with doves flying out of it, I like this image as everything contrasts well together as the sky and suit match and go together well. The use of the doves is interesting as these images are being used to advertise a bag so the use of white doves stands out to me.

Viviane sassen 'cluster' vs Vivian Maier new york
The similarities in these photographs are that they are both self portraits and in both of them there are shadows to cover both of their faces. The differences are that one photo is in black and white and the other is in colour, another difference is the background as one was taken outside and the other was taken inside with a plain background. The formal elements that are evident in these photographs are light as there is a contrast of light in both photographs as you can see the sunlight reflecting off of the background and you can also see the shadows that the sun is making.Another formal element you can see is line as there is sharp lines from the buildings in Vivian Maier's photographs.
Art and Photography
These are the pictures we took inspired by the art work to the left. The camera was positioned to the ground to get the right angle of the photograph, we decided to take the picture in a landscape view to try and recreate the picture as much as possible. The tone is in full colour and the style is posed as we tried to recreate the picture.I enjoyed doing this activity as it was fun to recreate an image but also be able to mess around with it and make it your own in a way.
Recreating paintings using studio lighting
This is the painting that we decided to recreate. We positioned the camera at eye level and the angle is narrow. The orientation is landscape and the tone of the photo is full colour. The style of the photo is posed as we tried to fully recreate the painting. The composition wasn’t that hard to meet and the framing of the image wasn’t hard either as we just had to make sure that the fabric looked similar to the painting and that it showed the same facial features. The original painting is called 'the lovers' by Rene Magritte and we chose to recreate it as it correlated to the theme we decided to go for, disguised portraits as we did not want to show our faces in this activity. We liked doing this activity as it was fun to recreate images and to be able to get an idea of what other peoples preferences are when taking images.

Rhiannon Adam
She is an Irish photographic artist and writer
Her work is heavily influenced by her nomadic childhood spent at sea
She is drawn to stories relating to the power of myth
In 2022 she was named as one of the eight crew members on a lunar tourism mission and art project scheduled to launch in 2023
In most of her work she focuses on lighting
I like Rhiannon's work as most of her work is based around other people and she does not seem to take photos/portraits of herself,I think that she is an interesting photographer as she is mainly specialised in polaroids. I also like that she bases her work around her childhood as this could give you an insight of what she enjoyed doing as a child.

Sally Mann
She is an American photographer
Most of her work is in black and white
Most of her photographs are of young children
She has received many awards
She has produced a lot of photographic portraits, landscapes and still life's
I personally like her work as most of her work is not in colour and in black and white as I like photos that are in black and white as it could show you what images used to look like when there was not cameras that could produce images in colour.I also like the idea of black and white images as it could make you think about what colours were originally there in the first place

Hanna Lenz
Hanna Lenz lives in Hamburg and works as a photographer for different editorial departments and she also produces her own projects creating portraits and documentary photography.
I personally like this project of Hanna Lenz's as you do not really see photography projects with the older generation and this old lady seems really sweet and these images give you an insight into this lady's house as there are more images of her home and how she lives.I also like this project as Hanna Lenz uses objects in these pictures and i think that makes the picture more interesting as in the middle picture the woman is drinking a drink and it makes you question the photo as to what is she drinking? How old is she? What is her story? How did she get to where she is today?.I also like the way she has angled these images as she has given us different angles of this woman as there is pictures of her sat down and standing up and there is also not just images only focused on the woman and there is focus on other objects too.
Julian Germaine
Julian Germaine first became interested in photography when he was in school, he then went on to study it later on in his life.He has produced many books which include his own images alongside other historical images.
I like Julian Germaine's work as he also focuses on objects in his photographs and shows us his insight into what he finds interesting as a photographer. The first image is my favourite one of his as the colour contrasts very well as there is a colourful background but the man that is in the image is wearing minimal colours. These are similar to Hanna's work as there is also a focus within objects around the house. In the description by Germain it shows us that Germain and Charlie were quite close so this could show us his relationship with him and could also show his true emotions as he is with someone that he knows so he could be more comfortable to show his true self.I quite like Germain's images and I do not think that I would change anything about these images.
